Students from across the nation choose the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois for many reasons. Our rankings reflect the quality of materials education at Illinois; U.S. News and World Report ranks our graduate program among the top in the nation. As an added bonus, graduate student stipends go further in Champaign-Urbana due to the lower cost of living than many big cities. Most importantly, students decide upon Illinois because they find a professor whose research interests match their own.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is committed to education, research, and public engagement. The College of Engineering is one of the most prestigious and largest engineering institutions in the nation. But the Illinois experience is more than academics. As a student, you will enjoy the arts, community involvement, sports and recreation. Discover dance, music and theater at the University's acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, cheer on the Fighting Illini sports teams in the Big Ten Conference, get involved with one of the 800+ registered student organizations or join an intramural sport through campus recreation.
