Eligibility and Application Process

Due Date:
Applications must be submitted by Feb. 15 of any given calendar year.

Who May Apply: You must be currently enrolled at one of our selected partner institutions (see list
below).

Important Application Notes:

  1. Consult with your home institution: Before applying to Illinois, you should
consult with your home institution’s administration for eligibility, internal procedures and any
    deadlines.
  2. Degree type details: By default, applications to the M.S. degree program in the
Department of Materials Science and Engineering will be considered for the non-
thesis option. Admission to the M.S. with thesis program is only considered upon
request of a faculty member on behalf of the applicant.
  3. Advising for M.S. students: All M.S. students are assigned to a faculty academic
advisor. In addition, most students in the M.S. program, including the non-thesis
option, join research groups to carry out research as independent study. The faculty
members who direct these research groups also closely advise our M.S. students.
  4.  You must check "3+2 Program" on your application form:
Screenshot of extra important section on the MatSE 3+2 application form. It says, "You must check the "3+2 Program" on your application form."

You must follow all required steps when applying to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering M.S. program. All details regarding items to include in a student application package may be found by clicking the button below.
