Academics

Undergraduates in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) at the University of Illinois study an interdisciplinary field that encompasses math, chemistry, physics, mechanics and electronics. Students focus on one of five areas—biomaterials, ceramics, electronic materials, metals or polymers—while exploring properties and phenomena that span all classes of materials.

The MatSE Department offers graduate work leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of materials research, collaboration across engineering departments is common.

MatSE at Illinois is among the top materials programs in the country, for both undergraduate and graduate programs.
