In late January 2025, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, hosted Professor Mark Hersam, chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, for an engaging research seminar. Professor Hersam presented his work as part of the Hassel and Marianne Ledbetter MatSE Colloquium.

Hersam is an alumnus of Illinois, where he earned both his B.S. in 1996 and his Ph.D. in 2000. His excellence in research and education have been demonstrated repeatedly, as he serves as executive editor of ACS Nano and earned several prestigious awards, including the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Marshall Scholarship.

During his seminar, attended by materials students and Department Head Nancy Sottos, Hersam shared insights into his groundbreaking research on low-dimensional nanoelectronic materials. His work at the forefront of nanotechnology explores the potential of these materials to significantly advance a diverse array of applications, from advanced electronics and energy storage systems to innovative sensing technologies, biomedical imaging and even quantum devices. The seminar not only showcased his visionary approach to solving complex scientific challenges but also highlighted the significant real-world impact of his research.

We are proud to have welcomed Professor Hersam. His dedication and innovative spirit not only set a high standard for future research but also serve as a source of inspiration for students, faculty, and peers alike.
