MatSE Ph.D. Student Elham Mohimi is a 2018 recipient of the prestigious Ross J. Martin Award for outstanding research achievement by a graduate student given by the College of Engineering.

Professor Ross Martin served as a member of the faculty of the College of Engineering for 40 years, the last 26 of which he served as Associate Dean and Director of the Engineering Experiment Station. He was an extraordinary person, dedicated to the highest standards of achievement for the members of our College. The award recognizes the quality and magnitude of Elham’s research achievements.

When asked what brought Elham to MatSE, she said, “I did extensive online search for Ph.D. studies and got familiar with Professor John Abelson’s research. We talked on Skype a few times, and his research was an exciting combination of materials science and chemistry which was a perfect match with my interests. He offered me graduate research assistant position and I gladly accepted it.”

"Her performance reaffirms Professor Martin’s ideals, and her selection helps to set the standard for future recipients," said Martin Wong, Executive Associate Dean for the College of Engineering.

“I believed in the quality and impact of my research and it was amazing to know that I was recognized by College of Engineering for that,” Elham said. “MatSE at Illinois is a place of great minds that brings out high quality education and research and I am very grateful and honored to be part of it.”
