MatSE graduate student Zeba Parkar was selected as a finalist for the $30,000 Lemelson MIT-Illinois Student Prize. Parkar co-founded SilverScreen, Inc. with Professor James Economy to develop and commercialize Milkshield. Milkshield is a low-cost material that can preserve milk against spoilage without refrigeration or use of excess energy. The material is immersed in milk to inhibit the activity of micro-organisms. It is considered an affordable alternative for subsistence farmers in developing countries.
