Charpagne earns prestigious honor for metallurgy advancements

Assistant Professor Marie Charpagne of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Grainger College of Engineering has earned a prestigious honor from The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. The organization honored her with its Early Career Faculty Fellow Award in recognition of not only her skill set broadening the technological profile of the organization, but also for the ways in which her accomplishments have advanced the field of metallurgy during her tenure at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. 

By the numbers

  • Charpagne was eligible for this award as a tenure-track assistant professor for 2-6 years, and within 8 years of receiving her Ph.D. degree.
  • Charpagne will attend two TMS annual meetings in 2026 and 2027 and organize a symposium in 2027.
  • Charpagne is receiving complimentary registration to the TMS 2025 Annual Meeting and Exhibition, along with a complimentary hotel stay and a travel stipend in both 2025 and 2026.

What’s next:

Charpagne is scheduled to give a lecture presentation on Tuesday, March 25 at the TMS Emerging Professionals Luncheon. Her talk is entitled “Pathways to Finding Your Own Driving Force as a Materials Scientist” and will focus on self-empowerment as well as building resilience at the early career stage. She will receive her award on Wednesday, March 26 during the TMS-AIME Awards Ceremony, which will take place in Las Vegas as part of the TMS annual exhibition event. These events add onto three invited presentations for Charpagne, three contributed presentations led by graduate researchers in her group, one undergraduate poster entry and other collaborative research to be presented at the TMS 2025 conference.
