Three MatSE PhD students, Mayank Garg, Aidan Gilchrist, and Scott McCormack, have received Mavis Future Faculty Fellows (MF3) Awards for the 2018-19 academic year.

Mayank Garg

“This is a great opportunity to learn how to teach,” Garg said. “Mayank has a passion for research and education and will make an outstanding faculty member,” MatSE Professor Nancy Sottos said.

Aidan Gilchrist

"Teaching has always been my career goal," Gilchrist said, "so I am excited for the opportunity to learn skill sets to be an effective educator through the MF3."

Scott McCormack

“To become a world class professor, you must also become a world class teacher," McCormack said. "Not only to train future students, but also to lead a research group to success. The Mavis Future Faculty Fellow award will help prepare me to achieve this goal.”

There are three main components to the MF3 Academy: teaching, research, and service.

Research

Professional development activities include dedicated workshops on communicating engineering research through writing and presentations as well as writing proposals. The Academy for Excellence in Engineering Education (AE3) and the Graduate College Career and Professional Development Office both offer workshops and discussion forums in which fellows will participate.

Teaching

All MF3 Fellows will have a significant teaching experience, through a teaching assistantship or potentially as guest lecturers at other institutions.

Mentoring

MF3 Fellows are required to mentor a less experienced graduate or undergraduate student and advise them on a research project.
